Spelling of High Frequency Words in EYFS/KS1

Spelling of High Frequency Words in EYFS and KS1

In Reception, children begin to learn how to recognise and spell high frequency words (words that we use lots), starting with simple words, such as; the, I , a, said, he, she etc. In Year 1 and Year 2, children continue to learn high frequency words, exploring the Year 1 and Year 2 Common Exception Words (CEW). These are words that we frequently encounter when reading and writing. For this reason, we aim for children to be able to recall these words with automaticity and these words therefore need to be practised frequently.
