  • The Great Fire of London

    Published 30/10/21

This term, we have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Great Fire of London in 1666, learning lots of interesting facts about what life was like in London at this time and why this was the biggest fire in the United Kingdom.

We are very proud of our display which shows our Tudor houses standing alongside the River Thames made by the children, photographs of our Pudding Lane baking, extracts of writing to be proud of and an array of wonderful vocabulary that we have been learning and using in our writing this term. You might even spot Boxton the rat just below the river edge!

Next term we look forward to contrasting what London is like now and how our capital city differs to what London was like in 1666.

    Roll on Term 2!

  • Vlad and the Great Fire of London

    Published 30/10/21

During Term 1, we have been exploring the super story of Vlad and the Great Fire of London by Kate Cunningham. This story is about Vlad the flea and his friend Boxton the rat, who love eating and biting their way around London in 1666. But one night in Pudding Lane they are caught up in a fire that threatens to destroy them, along with most of the City of London. Through this book, we learnt about how the fire is believed to have started, how it spread and what Londoners did to fight it and escape it. We also learnt about the famous diarist Samuel Pepys.

We loved getting to know the characters in this book and used our knowledge of the story and the diary of Samuel Pepys to write a series of diary entries as Vlad the flea. For a whole week, we were a class of fleas! We decided that Vlad's actual diary must have been the size of a speck of dust, but we were glad that we wrote ours in our English books!

We used 'Colourful Semantics' to help structure our sentences.

See if you can follow our Colourful Semantics plan below:

  • Great Fire of London Artwork

    Published 30/10/21

As part of our Great Fire of London topic, we have been exploring the concept of colour mixing to create different shades and tints.

We started by mixing primary colours to make secondary colours, moving on to creating a 'cold' picture by using white and black to create and blend different shades of blue. The children were amazed by how many different shades of blue they were able to make, giving the shades different names.

"This one is like a sea blue!"

    "It's dark cave blue."

"I'm going to call this colour ocean blue."

    "That's made a turquoise colour!"

We then applied this newly learnt skill to create a backdrop for our Great Fire of London artwork, using black and white to create different shades of red.

Once our backdrop was complete, we used a layering technique to create the rows of houses on Pudding Lane. We remembered to place our houses close together as this is one reason for why the fire spread so quickly.

We are very proud of our artwork. Here is a sample gallery below:

  • Parachute Fun

    Published 30/10/21

During Term 1, the children in Amazon Class have been doing a lot of team building, together with developing our focusing and attention and speaking and listening skills.

Developing these important skills is a big part of transitioning in to Key Stage 1, ensuring children have all the skills they need to learn and play cooperatively alongside their peers, access the learning and voice their ideas and opinions.

This term, the children have thoroughly enjoyed using the parachute as a creative and immersive way to develop these skills.

As you can see, at the end of a session using the parachute, the children enjoy going underneath the parachute altogether! Lots of fun and giggles for all!
